Reducing a plant structure such as a pine cone, a complex inflorescence, or a many petaled flower to a basic geometric form--triangle, square, pentagon, hexagon, ellipse, spiral, sphere, cube, or cylinder-- can provide a systematic way of beginning a drawing and can help the illustrator understand the plant structure. These forms and patterns have also provided me with the inspiration to try my hand at abstract designs.
